JOLED Pushes World's First Printed OLED Product to Expect 2018 Mass Production

[China Packaging Network News] Currently, the global OLED panel market is dominated by Korean factories, LG is the leading manufacturer of large-size OLED panels for TVs, and Samsung is bringing 90% of global small- and medium-size OLED panels to market share; however, the Japanese plant has also begun to actively In addition to research and development of OLED panels, in addition to Hon Hai/Sharp will invest 200 billion yen in R&D of OLEDs, Japanese OLED panel R&D/production company JOLED has already tested the world's first mid-size OLED panel products adopting “printing” technology. The target is mass production in the second half of 2018.

Nikkei News reported on the 19th that JOLED has used the “printing” technology with its cost mask advantage to try out a 20-inch high-resolution OLED panel with a resolution of 200ppi, which is similar to that of the most commercially available top-end PCs. The LCD panel; this 20-inch OLED panel will become the world's first product produced using printing technology.

There are two types of OLED panel production technologies. One is the “vapor deposition type” (used in the vacuum state where vaporized materials such as red, green, and blue are vaporized on the substrate) used by Korean factories such as Samsung and the like. The liquid luminescent material is precisely applied on the substrate like a printer, and the printing technology can produce OLED panels at a lower cost than evaporation because of the absence of vacuum equipment. However, its accuracy is low and it is not yet available. Establish mass production technology.

The report pointed out that JOLED's shareholder Japan Display Inc (JDI) has invested 20 billion yen to build the OLED panel trial production line at the Ishikawa Plant site to be opened in August 2016, and JOLED plans to use this line to test in August. The production of the above 20-inch OLED panel products was followed by mass production in the second half of 2018.

According to reports, JOLED plans to produce medium-sized OLED panel products that can be used in applications such as car/aircraft displays and conference room screens, commercial facilities, and station signage, in addition to PCs and flat panels.

JOLED is an integrated OLED panel company that integrates Sony and Panasonic OLED panel business and accepts the "Industrial Innovation Agency (INCJ)" and JDI of Japan's government-to-government fund on January 15, 2015. Now INCJ holds a 75% stake in JOLED, JDI. , Sony, Panasonic hold 15%, 5%, 5% equity respectively.

Yomiuri News reported on February 26th that JDI has initiated negotiations with JOLED and JDI intends to acquire JOLED. The report pointed out that JDI originally planned to merge with Sharp's panel business. It was only because Sharp decided to reorganize it under the Taiwan Hon Hai subsidiary and also forced the JDI conversion policy to be planned for integration with JOLED in 2016.
