Analyze the information the brain wants from brain waves

As long as you measure your brain waves, you can know what you are thinking. This sounds like a science fiction novel, but a new study in the UK has made some progress in this area, and can decode the brain waves with certain attributes significance.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom reported in a new issue of the American academic journal "PLoS Biology" that they invited six volunteers to participate in the experiment. These people will watch some images of faces showing expressions of happiness, fear, surprise, etc. Sometimes these images will be randomly covered, for example, only eyes and mouth can be seen. The subjects were asked to judge the facial expressions from such images, and the brain waves emitted by their brains during the thinking process were carefully recorded by the instrument.

The researchers then analyzed the role of different attributes such as the frequency, amplitude, and phase of brain waves in carrying information. The results showed that brain waves with a frequency of around 12 Hz carried more eye-related information, while the frequency was around 4 Hz. The brain waves carry more information about the mouth. In addition, the amount of information carried by phase and amplitude is much larger.

Professor Philip Schons, who led the research, said that although brain waves are easy to measure, it is often difficult to understand the meaning. It is like watching a TV with a problem with signal decoding. We can receive the signal, but we cannot see the image. The purpose of this research is to help find an effective decoding method. Now that you can see some images, you may be able to completely read the content represented by brain waves in the future.

He also pointed out that the brain uses waves of different frequencies to represent different parts of the face. The advantage is that waves of multiple frequencies can be superimposed to carry more information at the same time. This is the same as the way radio waves in different frequency bands are divided in fields such as broadcast communication similar. This similarity between the brain and existing technology in processing information makes it possible to develop human-machine interfaces, that is, it is possible for the brain to directly communicate with the computer through brain waves.
