**Zong Yi: The Visionary Behind the Electric Revolution**
There must be a cool thing in life – Zong Yi
Zong Yi, who lived by this motto, has done more than one impressive thing in his life. From being a car enthusiast to a tech innovator, from a self-piercing entrepreneur to a pioneer of electric mobility, he's always been at the forefront of change. Known as the ultimate geek, he's driven across China, built a successful business, and now stands as a symbol of technological progress in modern China.
Born in 1970, Zong Yi began his journey in 1992 when he joined Huabao Air Conditioning, where he laid the foundation for future innovations. In 2002, as globalization swept through China, he founded PHNIX, a company that started with heat pump products and eventually became a leader in the industry. Over the years, PHNIX has grown into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, known globally for its swimming pool heat pumps.
While Elon Musk was building Tesla on the other side of the world, Zong Yi was quietly making waves in China. As electric vehicles gained traction, he saw an opportunity not just for innovation, but for social impact. He believed that the future of transportation relied on a strong charging infrastructure, and so he took action.
In 2014, Zong Yi made headlines when he decided to return a Tesla ordered from Beijing to Guangzhou and instead used it to build the first cross-country charging network. His idea was simple yet revolutionary: donate a charging station every 300 kilometers along the route, turning hotels and restaurants into free charging hubs. This bold move sparked a wave of support, and within days, over 400 applications were received. By May 28, he had already installed the first charging pile in Beijing’s 798 Art District, investing nearly 4 million RMB in the process.
This trip wasn’t just about promoting electric cars; it was a mission to spread environmental awareness. “One of my public welfare efforts is to promote electric and eco-friendly vehicles,†Zong Yi said. His vision extended beyond just a single road — it was about creating a connected, sustainable future.
Zong Yi also pioneered a unique approach to entrepreneurship called "fission entrepreneurship." Under this model, employees could start their own businesses while still being part of the company. It included internal competitions, leadership opportunities, and even a five-year term limit to ensure constant innovation. This model was later recognized as a case study by China Europe Business School and became a blueprint for traditional companies transitioning into the digital age.
In 2014, Zong Yi launched another groundbreaking product: the ALife air purifier, which he called a "living air purifier." Designed to revolutionize indoor air quality, this product went through three rounds of self-piercing (a term he uses to describe deep innovation) before its official release. On September 23, 2014, the launch event at Beijing Zhuyujian Culture and Art Center marked a new chapter in clean air technology.
“September 23, breathe freely! Let the air live! Declare war on the haze!†Zong Yi declared, capturing the spirit of his mission.
Beyond his business ventures, Zong Yi continues to push boundaries. Whether it's through entrepreneurship, environmental advocacy, or technological innovation, he remains a driving force behind change in China.
