How to change the situation of "cold sports facilities are cold" in primary and secondary schools

How to Improve the Utilization of School Sports Facilities in Primary and Secondary Schools Date: April 6, 2015, 10:58 AM Since February this year, many primary and secondary schools in Shaoxing, Zhejiang have started to open their sports facilities to the public. After nearly two months of implementation, the results have been mixed. On weekends, only a small number of people came to use the facilities, leading to what could be described as a "cold" situation. While the decision to open up is commendable and the scope of access seems reasonable, other aspects still need improvement. It’s not just about the school's policies—it also reflects on the public's awareness and willingness to engage in physical activities. First and foremost, the key to opening school sports facilities to the community is ensuring that it doesn’t interfere with the normal teaching schedule. If the public access disrupts the daily operations or compromises the safety of the school, then the initiative may backfire. Therefore, citizens should understand that the opening hours and accessibility are determined based on the school’s needs. Instead of demanding strict schedules, people should make an effort to come during times when they don’t affect students’ learning and the overall safety of the campus. Secondly, the opening of school sports facilities isn’t just about convenience—it’s also a call for the public to take more interest in their health and physical activity. The real goal is to encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. In that sense, the location of the sports facilities isn’t as important as the mindset. If people truly value fitness, they would find ways to exercise, regardless of where the facilities are. So, rather than blaming the lack of openness, we should focus on changing people’s attitudes toward physical activity. Lastly, even though schools have opened their doors, there are still issues with low usage. For example, some people have fitness cards, but many haven’t claimed them or are still waiting for processing. This highlights a problem not only with the school’s policies but also with the public’s understanding and participation. People may not fully grasp the benefits of using these facilities, or they might not feel motivated to do so. To truly improve the situation, both schools and the public need to work together. On one hand, schools must follow through with the established plans and ensure that the facilities are well-maintained and accessible. On the other hand, the public should show respect and responsibility by following rules, keeping the environment clean, and using the equipment properly. Only through mutual cooperation can this initiative truly benefit everyone involved. Ultimately, the success of opening school sports facilities depends on shared efforts and a collective commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
