Texas Instruments and VeriSign Joint RFID Model

In order to combat counterfeit drugs in the pharmaceutical circulation field, TI and Verisign released a white paper in June 2005 to provide the pharmaceutical industry with an identifiable RFID model. The model proposes an improvement on the real-time safety of item-level products: by creating a higher level of authentication between the tag and any identifiable RFID reader (placed from the manufacturing site to the point of sale).

This model uses ISO/IEC standard 13.56 MHz RFID and PKI public key technologies and plans to complete the fight against counterfeit drugs in two phases. TI's and VeriSign 's identifiable RFID models can identify individual drugs, as well as confirm all drug transactions within the surveillance system beyond the working hours of the circulation infrastructure.
