Municipal waste methanation treatment process

In the past 10 years, landfill or incineration methods have been used to treat domestic waste in France. By burning garbage, it can generate heat energy or generate electricity. However, it will emit greenhouse gases, and landfills may contaminate nearby soil. France is currently trying to treat organic waste with a methanation process so that it will benefit both the environment and the economy.
Warrag International Engineering, based in Montpellier, France, has developed a process for the methanation of household waste that can convert waste into compost and biogas in just three weeks. The company said that the methanation process is characterized by the ability to isolate organic matter from the air and accelerate its degradation in anaerobic environments.
The methanation process requires a reactor made of cement on the inside, which ferments the organics during operation. The base of the reactor has a number of holes through which pressurized biogas is injected. The reactor stirs and mixes the waste. Under the impetus of the biogas, the waste is continuously stirred in the reactor and finally reaches the exit. This process takes 3 weeks until the waste is completely degraded and eventually produces high-quality compost. The biogas generated during the bacterial fermentation is collected and stored at the exit and can be reused in the form of heat energy and power generation.
The cost of a complete methanation waste treatment facility is equivalent to 1/2 of the incineration equipment of the same processing capacity, and the former is 30%-40% lower than the latter, and about 70 Euros per one ton of waste. Methanation and composting are becoming more and more popular among farmers in Europe because composting can bring organic humus to the land and can improve land infertility caused by the enhanced agricultural cultivation.
