At this year's Shanghai International Children's Book Fair, Shanghai Printing Group showed the public a more environmentally friendly flexographic printing technology, and used this technology to print a large number of children's books. Flexographic printing uses water-based ink, does not contain petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and other toxic and hazardous substances, the production process does not require the use of organic solvents, no pollution to the environment. Wang Weikang, assistant general manager of Shanghai Xinhua Printing Co., Ltd., told reporters: "Ink flexo printing is currently the most environmentally friendly printing method. We poured water-based ink into the fish tank, which will not hinder the survival of fish."
Flexographic printing has been used abroad for decades, and has accounted for 70% of the printing and packaging field. In China, only ten years of development history, flexible printing accounts for only about 10% of the printing industry.
In 2011, in accordance with the requirements of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, Shanghai Printing Group began the experiment of printing textbooks using flexo technology. After three years of exploration, the product standards for flexo textbooks were initially established. After acceptance, the quality of its printing can fully meet the reading requirements of textbooks. After three years of research, the cost has also dropped significantly. The comprehensive cost of products with more than 100,000 prints has been basically the same as that of traditional printing. It has reached the project's expected goal and filled the gap in the domestic printing of books with flexographic ink. At present, Shanghai Printing Group has flexographically printed more than 5 million textbooks of primary and secondary schools in 40 varieties, a set of "Listen to Dad Telling Stories" children's book series, and a "Read 365 Nights" children's book.
Flexo printing has not been promoted in China for a while. Cost is the main reason. Compared with offset printing, the cost of original and auxiliary materials for flexographic printing is 30% higher, and the cost of plate making is nearly 20 times higher. Wang Weikang said: "Because of the environmental protection characteristics of ink-jet printing, flexo printing in developed countries in Europe and the United States has accounted for 70% of the total printing. Most of the top 500 companies consciously use environmentally friendly production methods to produce. The competition between domestic companies is often based on price. Competition is the main means, and ink printing will naturally not become the first choice for enterprises. Like other public welfare products, so few companies choose flexo technology independently. "
Shanghai Xinhua Printing Company has invested 29.11 million yuan since the establishment of this project in 2011 to September 2014. Among them, the flexographic plate making cost nearly 2.5 million yuan, and the cost of labor and consumables testing is tens of millions of yuan. During this period The government's financial funds at all levels subsidized more than 10 million yuan, which played a decisive role in the success of the project. However, since the beginning of this year, the government ’s subsequent financial support is difficult to implement, and the printing industry ’s printing processing cost has remained unchanged for more than ten years. In the case that the printing quantity cannot reach the break-even point of the cost of flexo printing, the publishing house can hardly bear For the extra cost of flexographic plate making, the operation of the production base for flexographic ink-printing textbooks of Shanghai Xinhua Printing Company has fallen into a difficult position.
In fact, the high cost is just a matter of printing volume. According to experimental calculations by the engineering staff of the Printing Group, if the flexo plate making is changed from outsourcing to self-made, the comprehensive plate making cost can be reduced by nearly 50%. When the number of prints is 100,000, the cost of flexo printing is 9 times that of offset printing; when 500,000 prints, the combined cost of the two can be flattened; when more than 500,000 prints, flexo printing will be cheaper than offset printing. The printing rate can reach 1 million impressions.
Wang Weikang said: "The development of flexo printing is actually a matter of great benefits. Children can read healthily, the environment can reduce some pollution, and the cost of flexo printing is cheaper than offset printing after the market volume.
