Shanghai's first metal toy museum opens to showcase precious toys

Li Xiaoyan, an intern reporter for Dongfang.com, reported on July 14: From the wooden gyro, cockfighting games, slingshots, and card game machines of the 1990s to the hoops and hopscotch of the 1980s, each era had its own unique toys that carried the dreams of childhood. Recently, the Shanghai Hongkou Metal Toy Museum officially opened its doors, marking the first museum of its kind in Shanghai. At the entrance of the museum, a large wooden bear stands proudly, as if ready to take photos of every visitor. This bear, created in the 1970s, is a popular children's toy that has been magnified into a life-sized sculpture. It serves as the iconic symbol of the Shanghai Metal Toy Museum. The museum spans approximately 700 square meters and houses over 3,000 metal toys from the 1930s through the 1990s. These items come from various sources, including foreign collections, domestic collectors, and toy factories. Each piece tells a story of innovation, craftsmanship, and nostalgia. One of the museum’s most impressive exhibits is the 10,000-ton hydraulic press, which is a full-scale replica of the original machine. Once batteries are installed, it can be operated to simulate real-life functions. According to reports, this model was once used in kindergartens across Shanghai as an educational tool. Additionally, the museum features two rare exhibits: mobile dragons and crocodiles, both produced in the 1970s and the only remaining examples in the world. The Shanghai Metal Toy Museum is located at No. 1315 Liangcheng Road, Hongkou District. It is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Whether you're a collector, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about the past, this museum offers a fascinating journey through the evolution of toys and the memories they bring back.
