Taihu Lake, located on the southern edge of the Yangtze River Delta, was once known as Zhenze and is one of China's five largest freshwater lakes. It spans across Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, with Wuxi to the north, Huzhou to the south, Yixing to the west, and Suzhou to the east. The lake covers an area of over 2,400 square kilometers, with a shoreline stretching nearly 400 kilometers. Its western and southwestern sides are surrounded by hills and mountains, while the eastern part is characterized by plains and a network of waterways.
The cycling route around Taihu Lake offers a variety of options. The shortest route is about 250 kilometers, which can be completed in a single day, or you can take a longer trip spanning two or three days. The scenic beauty of the lake has made it a popular destination for cyclists, and it has long been a favorite among both locals and travelers. In May 2014, after spending time in Sichuan-Tibet, I was so impressed by the route that I decided to explore the main attractions around Taihu Lake, including the ancient towns of Tongli, Mudu, and Nanxun, as well as the Taihu Wetland Park, Three Kingdoms City, Shantou, Yixing Taodu, and the Changxing Ginkgo Promenade.
For this trip, I prepared a range of essential gear. A road bike was my primary choice due to the good road conditions around the lake, though mountain bikes with wider tires could also work well. I used a Merida Challenger 500, and my Giant XTC750 performed just as well. A helmet is crucial for safety, and I opted for a full-face model from SMS, which met all the necessary protective standards. Kneepads were also important, especially for the 400-kilometer ride, and I found that even basic bamboo charcoal pads helped prevent knee pain. Riding gloves provided comfort and improved grip, while a variety of scarf protected against dust and UV rays.
I packed a tire repair kit, including a pump, spare tube, and tools, as accidents can happen at any time. A water bottle with good sealing was essential, and I used a hydration pack during the summer months. Sunglasses were a must, especially to reduce glare and protect my eyes. Jerseys helped reduce wind resistance and improve comfort, and I wore long-sleeve shirts for extra sun protection.
A riding bag was convenient for carrying essentials, and I chose a waterproof model from OSAH. For camping, I brought a Mobiru 2-wing tent, along with a moisture-proof mat and a lightweight sleeping bag. I also carried a small flashlight, a phone with a portable charger, and basic personal items like my ID, wallet, and keys. There was no need to bring bedding, as the area around Taihu Lake is well-developed with plenty of places to eat and stay.
Overall, the key to a comfortable and safe ride is having reliable equipment. While the surrounding areas offer many opportunities to restock supplies, having quality gear makes the journey more enjoyable and less stressful.
