German scientists research into a new type of anionic battery material
Recently, Ingo Crosin of the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Freiburg in Germany made a new type of anion after several years of research, which can be used as a durable high-power battery material.
Anions are negatively charged atoms or molecules that act as part of the electrolyte to transport charge between the electrodes of the battery. According to a recent report from the German newspaper Le Monde, the large anions made of Crosine have a very low charge density and are weakly bound to cations, hence the name weakly coordinated anions. This ion is surrounded by a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene.
Because this kind of anion has little attraction and weak interaction with other components in the electrolyte, the electrolyte has extremely strong conductivity, which can make the battery provide high-intensity current quickly.
In addition to manufacturing durable high-power batteries, this new anion can also act as a catalyst to accelerate chemical reactions. It is not only stable in nature, but also easy to produce and low in cost.
