According to statistics, if a load-regulated transformer is replaced or modified, when the reactive load is reasonably adjusted, a considerable amount of reactive equipment can be added. Therefore, it can be said that the on-load voltage regulating transformer is not only the key equipment to guarantee the power supply quality of modern power system, but also can be used to transform the old power system, resulting in great economic benefits.

However, in recent years, some abnormal conditions have occurred in the on-load tap-changer. The traditional on-load voltage-regulating transformer uses a mechanical voltage-regulating tap-changer. There are many problems, such as arc generation, slow operation speed, inconvenient maintenance, and high failure rate.

On-load voltage regulation should be dynamically adjusted according to the actual operating state of the power system to avoid voltage regulation under fault. The research shows that the on-load voltage-regulating transformer acts when the system has a large disturbance, which will cause the system to be overloaded, which will produce a negative voltage regulation effect and reduce the stability of the system. Therefore, how to diagnose the failure of the system in time and ensure that the on-load tap changer can operate and block correctly is also a problem urgently needed to be solved in the current new on-load voltage transformer.
